Congress takes on Modi's taunt, dubs him 'villain'

Even as Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday taunted Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in his Independence Day speech, Congress leaders launched an all-out attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader.
Several Union Ministers rained verbal volleys on Modi with External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid even dubbing him “khalnayak” (villain).

“He is a khalnayak. You must have heard of a film by that name,” Khurshid told reporters. He was asked to comment on Modi likening the scams during UPA II to TV serials “Mama aur Bhanja” (uncle and nephew) and “Saas, Bahu aur Damaad” (mother-in-law, daughter-in-law and son-in-law), the latter being seen as an oblique reference to Robert Vadra’s purported land deals.

Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad sought to dismiss Modi’s criticism of the prime minister by saying, “There is only one PM, while there are over two dozen chief ministers”.

Human Resources Development Minister M M Pallam Raju said it was easy for Modi to criticise the Centre without understanding the issues faced by the government. He complimented the prime minister on steering the country deftly in difficult times marked by the economic downturn, hostile neighbours and natural disasters.

Asked about Modi’s criticism of the foreign policy pursued by the UPA, Khurshid said the BJP leader should first introspect as “his deeds are such that he does not even get a visa”. The reference was to the denial of US visa to Modi in connection with the 2002 post-Godhra riots. Khurshid also took a swipe at Modi over his “yes, we can” speech in Hyderabad, saying the phrase was borrowed from US President Barack Obama’s speech and Modi had merely read out from the prepared text.
