Modi punches holes in Singh's speech

Raising the pitch for the 2014 electoral battle, Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday used his Independence Day speech to take a dig at Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, calling his address from the ramparts of Lal Qila a “disappointing one.” Modi also accused Singh of supporting dynastic politics.
He had already set the tone for a “speech versus speech” battle on the eve of Independence Day, commenting that the focus “will not only on Lal Qila but also Lalan College in Bhuj where he made the address.”

Addressing a huge gathering at the college almost an hour after the prime minister finished his address, Modi made a point-by-point rebuttal to Singh’s address.

Modi said the prime minister mentioned, in his Independence Day address, only about the contributions of the Nehru and Gandhi family and nothing about Lal Bahadur Shashtri. “The prime minister should stop believing in ‘pariwarwaad’ (dynasty politics) and rather talk of the achievements of the contributions of all the prime ministers who have led the country,’’ said Modi delivering his address in Hindi.
Modi equated the performance of the Centre with that of a tele soap opera. “These days the government is like an opera, ‘Saas bahu and damaad,’ ’’ quipped Modi.

Bringing in reference of  the attack on Indian soldiers across the border, he said the prime minister wished to remain silent about the attacks. “While he did make a mention of the families and the victims who lost their lives in the Uttarakhand disaster, there was no mention of the soldiers who laid down their lives saving the victims of the affected families,’’ said Modi.

Modi said the “prime minister’s speech was without any perspective and had nothing new to offer. He went on to challenge Singh and said he was ready for a debate on the parameters of development in Delhi and Gujarat.
